We analyzed apparently healthy, randomly selected male individuals from four different population groups: a randomly selected group of unrelated male individuals (n = 73) from the general population in Oradea (Bihor county, North-Western Romania), and three other groups consisting of three ethnically isolated populations of the same county: (1) Sinteu, comprised of Slovak-origin individuals (n = 35); (2) Tileagd, comprised of Romani individuals (n = 35); and (3) Palota, comprised of German-origin individuals (n = 32). All three populations are well characterized by ethnic criteria of genetic isolation. The history of these isolates is, however, different. The Sinteu isolate was formed at the end of the 18th century by Slovak people who emigrated from Slovakia, then living geographically and ethnically isolated from the autochthon population and also isolated from other Slovak immigrant communities. The Tileagd isolate consists of a Gypsy community who immigrated 45 years ago (1965) from a different location within Romania to the Tileagd area (an old Romanian-Hungarian village), forming a closed community of individuals, without admixture with the local population or other gypsy communities; thus, the vast majority of marriages were and remain endogamous. The Palota isolate consists of a population of German origin established here in 1786 and ethnically isolated from the autochthon population.
