Hello,

I am making my first trip to Serbia in July and will be spending most of my time doing family research, and am looking for some help.

- My great grandfather, Milan Z. Micic, born 1883 (unknown) and died in 1931 in Zajecar. At the time he was "elected mayor of the city, but it was not the Zupan (Region’s governor)" according to family documents. My grandfather, Zivojin M. Micic recounts the funeral as a large military funeral with 4 canons firing into the cornfields and the entire town of Zajecar being involved. He also mentions that it was the biggest funeral Zajecar had seen at the time. However I am confused as my grandfather has documented: "The cemetery was on the side of the hill Čačalica…On the approx. 100m from the chapel in the second row on the left his grave was prepared."

When I google Čačalica it appears to be in Požarevac, which is the next town they moved to after Milan's death. But my grandfather mentions walking from Javorska Street where they were living (very close to fountain close to Bull’s market (Govedja pijaca)). Does anyone have any information about this funeral and potentially where Milan is buried - Zajecar or Požarevac?

- Secondly, which historic archive would I visit to find information (i.e death certificates) about Milan Z. Micic's time in Zajecar?

Thank you for any help! As I am coming for Australia I want to make sure I'm visiting the right places.

Чачалица is definitely in Пожаревац, so you should visit that town too.

I mannaged to find in the Almanac of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes from 1927-1928, volume III, parts 7, 8 and 9, page 490:

So, at some point in the late 1920s, your great grandfather seems to have been head of Boljevac county, Boljevac being another small town in Eastern Serbia, so you might want to take that into consideration as well.
