Hi Gary and welcome,

We already had a correspondence, so I know some basic information about you and your family. As I wrote to you, you fit in a specific genetic profile which we designated as Drobnjaci Novljani.

I will try to help you to find some informations about your male ancestors and I hope that other forum members will help too.

As you already have written your Ancestor Jovan Barach (Barać is original form) is from Podlapača in Lika region in nowadays Croatia.

Jovan came from one of the local Serbian Orthodox families which were first time enlisted in Austrian census of Lika in 1712. This is Barać family members which that census mention in Podlapača:

Marco Barich vnter den haus 441/3

As we can see there were 7 houses od Barać's in Podlapača in 1712. Baraćs lived in part of Podlopača which later got name : Svračkovo selo.

In census of 1915, there were 14 houses of Baraćs in Podlapača (Svračkovo selo). So the number of Barać families have doubled from 1712 till 1915.

According to closest genetic relatives we can very surely conclude that Baraćs came to lika region from Drobnjaci clan in nowadays Montenegro, or region of old Herzegovina.

Most of Krajina Serbs families,  during 16th century, came to Lika and Dalmatia from the same region.

It is very possible that Baraćs migrated to Lika together with Usorci tribal group.

I don't know if you are Orthodox christian, but krsna slava or family saint of your ancestors was Saint Nicholas.

Thank you very much for the information.

I was brought up as Lutheran, my mothers side. I do know that my grandmother was Orthodox christian. Very interesting picture, I only saw it from the front and side using google maps. I also followed the road to the cemetery.

Gary,

On this link you can find original church parish book from Podlapača for the year 1857/1858

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1971-28191-25973-8?cc=2040054&wc=MC59-VTG:391644701,391662201,391646602

Unfortunetely, only saved is for that specific year, all data of birth, baptized, married, death for that year are there, I have a quick look and there some Baraćs there. It is little hard to read even for us Serbs, because it is old church slavonic language.

Are you able to send or send me the link to the 1915 census or prior? I have been using google translate. My great uncle on his declaration has named Bunic, for residence. As my windows computer has crashed with bad sectors, I need to get another hard drive and install windows and my program doesnt like Ubuntu.

This is from my cousin, in response to an email from this group.
Hi Gary ,
This is just great ! I can remember Gma Mary telling me she was raised catholic & Gpa Barach was Serbian Orthodox with St. Nicholas as our family patron saint . Your dad was named after him. Kind of funny as Dorothy Barach says the respected the Sabbath .
I'll keep trying to remember anything of relevance but each year it seems less & less.
Great work !

This is from another cousin, are family genealogist.
Our uncle Petar Barach was born Mar. 19, 1883.  I have information from Petar's death certificate his mother's maiden name was Lovrnich.  Petar was the uncle who accompanied our grandfather Jovan Barach to the U.S.A. in 1907.  The Lovrnich name has significance to our family.  Great research work, Gary..

I was able to extract this data.

1915 census

This is a list of land parcels with area or parcel code. "vnter den haus" is on German and means that it is a parcel around his house, second one is "in Podlopaz: polie" or Podlapac field (polie is field on Serbian), thrid is land in Rosuli (interesting is that even today exist toponym Rosulje near Podlapac and Svrackovo selo) and so on.

There is no doubt that Lovrnich is, in fact, Lovric. Lovric is Serbian surname from nearby Široka Kula village,west of Podlapac,  from the other side of hill. So, Petar's mother was most probably from Široka Kula. There is even part of village there with name: Lovrića Varoš which means Lovric's "town".

I was able to extract this data.

1915 census

Barac - 4 k.:
1) Podlapac -3:
2) Paola - 1

This is different surname, ending with c instead of ć as in  Barać. This is catholic family. Not connected with your Barać's

Barac-28 k:
1) Kozjan (Bunić) - 6;
2) 6-  Mekinjar:
3) Šalamunić - 2;
4) Svračkovo village (Udbina) -14

This is, probably, all your cousins from different villages in Lika.

Baric -19 k.:
1) LukovoŠugarje - 10;
2) Lika Pet  rovo village - 9
Baric - L. Šugarje.

This is also different surname, not connected with yours.

Eror - 41 k.:
1) Babin Potok (Vrhovine) - 17;
2) Banic 10;
3) Fat Hill (Bunić) - 6;
4) Window (Otočac) -1;
5) Vrhovine - 7

This is Serbian family Eror, what are their connection with your family?

Lovric -18 k.:
1) Gospic-1;
2) Sir. Kula - 12

I already said about Lovric's.

Jovan brother, Eli Barich b 1880 wife, Angeline (Jennie) b. 1879 maiden name.
She was born in Bunic, according to the Declaration of Intention.
Eli changed his last name on the Nationalization paper.
