"The first records date back to 970 AD, when the Schiavoni, after having definitively removed the Saracens on the orders of Otto I, founded Pesclizio on the ruins of a farmhouse destroyed by the Saracens.
The first document about the Slav presence in the town of Peschici is a chartula offertionis dated 1023, containing, in addition to the donation of the Abbey of Calena to the Abbey of Santa Maria a Mare (Tremiti Islands) of the Archbishop Leone of Siponto. In this document there are not only references on the town of Peschici, but also on the presence of the Slav community in the area and on the excellent relations that this community managed to have with the local population and its social system. Another document confirming the presence of the Slavs in Peschici is a donation in 1053, drawn up by Slavs defined as residing in the Pesclizio castle.
In 1154, during the Norman domination Peschici appears to be dependent on the county of Lesina. There are many documents that confirm it, including a deed of Count Goffredo de Ollia di Lesina and the date of Queen Giovanna (daughter of Henry II of England, future wife of William II) [7].
The very name of Peschici is probably of Slavic origin, in fact the Slavic root "pès" (or "pèsc") refers to sand, the Slavic toponyms pjèskusa and Russian pèski indicate sandy soil."
