MyHeritage tree integration

We aim to release the new family tree collaboration with MyHeritage by mid-May. We know there are numerous issues with our family tree builder and viewer, and we hope this new collaboration solves all of them.

FamilyTreeDNA trees will become read-only at the beginning of September. Trees that have yet to be transferred will remain on FamilyTreeDNA, but you will only be able to edit those trees or link new matches if you transfer to MyHeritage.

We will send a separate email with many more details about the process before the release so that you can prepare for it.

Once the connection is live, we will have numerous help resources available for you and your project members, including our Help Center and our blog. We know many admins manage trees for their project members, and project members often go to you with questions, so below is a quick glance at how the process will work.

A brief overview

You can use an existing or a new MyHeritage account. Accounts at MyHeritage are free to create. Once connected, you will also be able to disconnect your kit from a MyHeritage account under the FamilyTreeDNA Account Settings.

You will be able to transfer your existing tree on FamilyTreeDNA, use an existing tree on MyHeritage if you have one, or create a brand new tree on MyHeritage.

If you choose to transfer your existing FamilyTreeDNA tree, we will transfer your GEDCOM to MyHeritage behind the scenes. There’s more to this process, but we’ll provide you with that info separately to keep this email from being ridiculously long.

Genetic data will not be shared with MyHeritage. The genetic data of matches will not be shared with MyHeritage. The only personally identifiable information that will be shared, whether you transfer, connect, or build, is:

  • Primary email address
  • Full name
  • Date of birth

The number of individuals and linked matches on your FamilyTreeDNA tree

Where applicable, a GEDCOM file of your FamilyTreeDNA tree with your family tree notes and photos

Family Matching will be available. Although it will require re-linking matches, we’ve made that process as simple as possible.

You will still be able to view match trees, even those who do not or cannot transfer their tree.

Collaborating with project members, creating multiple trees for your project, and connecting multiple kits to one tree are just some of the benefits of the integration.

Trees will have a 250-person limit for the free version we provide. Trees with more than 250 individuals will still be transferred intact, but you will be unable to add more individuals without a subscription. We believe the other benefits will outweigh that drawback.
